Pneumonia remains one of the most serious diseases even in the era of antibiotics. Approximately 3,800,000 people die from it worldwide each year, making it the most common cause of death in children under 5 years of age. Pneumonia significantly burdens healthcare systems economically, and it is clear that this burden can be reduced through rational and timely antibiotic treatment. There is a noticeable correlation between the amount of antibiotics administered and the higher incidence of pathogen resistance, but on the other hand, also with a decrease in mortality and the number of hospitalizations. The increase in pneumonia cases in the elderly is mainly due to immunosenescence and a general decrease in immunity. The successful publication by leading Czech pulmonologists Petr Jakubec and Samuel Genzor is now available in its second, updated, and expanded edition. Its success is undoubtedly based on the fact that it is designed as a manual for everyday use in both outpatient and hospital pulmonary practice. The target audience includes not only pulmonologists but also general internists and intensivists.
