Beschreibung
Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) arises as a result of selective neurodegenerative damage predominantly in the speech areas of the dominant hemisphere. Pathological processes lead to the disruption of the complex language network in the brain, localized mainly in the cerebral cortex, but also significantly involving subcortical structures. The publication summarizes the clinical picture of the main variants of PPA and the diagnostic procedure using tests available in the Czech Republic. Diagnosing speech/language processes in PPA will not only allow for the timely identification of even subtle disorders in the early stages of the disease but also monitor the dynamics of changes in the clinical picture over time. Adequate speech therapy is a crucial treatment tool for these patients, with great potential to alleviate the consequences of their disrupted communication. Therefore, the publication provides an overview of intervention procedures that a speech therapist can apply in their clinical practice in the care of patients with PPA and their families.
