The monograph by our leading specialists in the field of algology aims to provide the reader with a clear and up-to-date overview of the issues surrounding chronic pain, including its impacts on the patient (physical, psychological, and social), and also (given the increasing number of patients suffering from chronic pain) its effects on the economy. The authors, among other things, appeal for a rational choice of pharmacotherapy with caution in selecting over-the-counter products and not underestimating communication with the patient. The introductory chapters briefly mention the pathophysiology of pain, its classification, and the psychosocial contexts of chronic pain. Separate chapters are then dedicated to pain treatment methods – pharmacotherapy, invasive methods, psychotherapy for chronic pain syndrome, and other treatment methods (e.g., acupuncture and TENS). In the second, 'special' part of the publication, the authors thoroughly address the treatment of individual painful syndromes – headaches, back pain, complex regional pain syndrome, chest pain, and abdominal pain, treatment of pain in seniors, neuropathic pain, treatment of oncological and breakthrough pain.
