The puerperium is the period up to the 42nd day after childbirth. It is characterized by the subsiding of physiological and pathophysiological changes associated with the body's adaptation to pregnancy, healing of any peripartum injuries, and the development of lactation. Although this period is crucial for the quality of a woman's subsequent life, it does not always receive sufficient attention – partly because the woman herself is fully focused on the child and tends to downplay any health issues.
