The first edition of this publication was received with enthusiasm by the professional public and significantly contributed to the expansion of this method in the Czech Republic. After several years, the second edition is being released, reflecting the technical development in this field as well as the accumulating experiences. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is one of the most progressive methods in contemporary cardiology and medicine as a whole. Unlike other "extracorporeal" methods, ECMO can be applied without long preparation, including in cases of sudden cardiac arrest resistant to standard resuscitation. The indications for ECMO are rapidly increasing as the method expands, and they now encompass a wide range of both elective and urgent situations.
