Emma – Austenová Jane (2023)

In times when women were delicate flowers and young girls often fainted interestingly, Jane Austen created a heroine of a different mold in her novel Emma. When she loses her mother at a young age and cannot rely on her father, a weak hypochondriac, she takes charge of affairs at her family estate herself, and the demands that her difficult situation places on her cultivate in the sharp girl the qualities of a sovereign general. Only she understands everything, only she knows what is good for everyone. However, this way, she stumbles from one mishap to another and often gets herself into trouble even with those she genuinely wanted to help. But because she has a good heart, she eventually grows wiser and understands where to seek the true values in life. The novel (in its film adaptation, Emma was portrayed by the beloved Gwyneth Paltrow) is experiencing a new wave of reader interest lately. Is it perhaps because today's women recognize in its heroine a predecessor of their efforts for social recognition of their abilities – and also the pitfalls they should avoid? Or is it simply that the virtues and nobility of a bygone era still speak to us very clearly through the amazing author that is Jane Austen?
