Slovník české frazeologie a idiomatiky 5 – group of authors (2023)

The Onomaziological Dictionary fundamentally supplements and unifies the previously published four volumes of the Dictionary of Czech Phraseology and Idiomatic Expressions. It includes phrases and idioms from all four published volumes, which it connects together through a changed organization and presentation method based on a unified perspective, namely meaning. Most traditional dictionaries present their entries in a way that requires us to search alphabetically by the headword or its form. This dictionary, which is onomaziological and essentially serves as a thesaurus of Czech phraseology, instead starts from the meaning of the entries, thus reversing the method of searching (instead of starting from the headword form, it begins from the headword's meaning). Based on a chosen specific meaning, it lists all relevant entries, which are internally categorized, among other things, according to whether they are similes, non-verbal expressions, verbal expressions, or sentences (which corresponds to the arrangement of the published and alphabetically organized four volumes). The used base meanings, according to which everything is organized here, are single words, but they are supplemented as needed with necessary combinations covering the core meaning of the searched expression.
