This book traces the origin and content of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and its consequences. The norm, whose primary purpose was to equalize blacks in the southern United States, brought about a fateful departure from the principle of freedom. It gave rise to the infamous affirmative action and ultimately to the ideology of political correctness. Americans thus lost not only freedom of speech but also democracy, as the enforcement of the 'new constitution,' as the author calls the jumble of legal norms and official decrees that gradually piled up on the Civil Rights Act, increasingly took place – and still takes place – not in parliament, but through courts and state offices. A fundamental political paradox of the United States in recent decades is the fact that with the gradual elimination of segregation of blacks, the issue of race not only did not disappear but even became a dominant American obsession.
