You are holding the third volume of non-Holmesian prose, which primarily contains stories dedicated to doctors and other researchers. Perhaps precisely because A. C. Doyle was originally a physician, his stories are infused with a deep understanding of the suffering and those who take on the burden of responsibility for their healing. He can depict even the harsh trials of life in the form of illness with a sense of detachment and highlight the tragicomic aspects of the evolving situations. He takes us to the operating room of a Victorian hospital, to the office of a newly minted doctor anxiously awaiting his first patient (The Beginning as a Trial, which is being published in Czech for the very first time), or among doctors chatting over a glass about their cases. In most of these prose pieces, we find humorous to ironic elements that demonstrate the author's sense of humor. Those who enjoy adventurous stories with distinctly detective plots will not be disappointed either: for them, the collection includes the stories The Black Doctor and The Doctor in the Marshes. There are also tales concerning designers, inventors, and other bold specialists.
