Pýcha a předsudek – Austenová Jane (2021)

There is no doubt that the heroine of the novel Pride and Prejudice, Lizzy, is none other than Jane Austen (1775–1817) herself. Although she lived such a typically conflict-free life (she never married and reportedly rejected her only marriage proposal within an hour), there is no fateful bitterness reflected in her work. It seems that she was rather immensely entertained by her position as a daughter without a dowry, and thus a girl without special chances for a better marriage – much like a person watching an entertaining comedy at the theater. By adding an ironic subtext, she advanced the novelistic creation several generations ahead of the spheres of naive realism. More than a century and a half has passed, a time that has absorbed hundreds of literary works that were prophesied to achieve immortality at their inception; and these were works with far more striking and exciting themes than Pride and Prejudice. The subtle charm of Jane Austen has its constant grateful circle of readers, and each new generation discovers the author's legacy in its own way, in new shades of color and new brilliance.
