Beschreibung
A Brief Mediterranean History focuses on the history of Southern European countries, but also pays attention to the Balkans, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, and Israel (ancient Levant) and the Arab countries in North Africa. The narrative begins in ancient antiquity and is carried through to recent years. In line with the author's focus (today a history professor who also worked as a tourist guide), the text has the character of a travel guide with a broader space for historical information, highlighting important monuments and cultural attractions. In the book, you will find several dozen boxes dealing with selected subtopics such as Caesar's conquest of Marseille, new archaeological discoveries in Thessaloniki, Norman conquests in Southern Italy, Renaissance Venice, the failed attempt by the Spaniards to capture the fortress of Algiers at the end of the 18th century, the fate of Crete in the 19th century, the role of aviation during the so-called Suez Crisis in 1956, etc. A special chapter is dedicated to the presence of the Mediterranean in the works of William Shakespeare.
