Beschreibung
The First Man is primarily an autobiographical novel, but it also features themes of Algerian homeland, poverty, violence, and justice. The main character is Jacques Cormery, an Algerian Frenchman who returns to his native Algeria to visit his mother and search for his father. In this novel, Camus likely intended to develop the theme of injustice and violence in Algeria and his relationship with his homeland and family. Nevertheless, this work is a typical example of Camus's writing, in which he reflects on questions of the meaning of life and the loss of faith among the poor. He comments on the civil war in Algeria and attempts to find the causes of the discord between Arabs and French. A distinctive feature of the novel is the detailed and realistic portrayal of Cormery, which is essentially Camus's own childhood.
