Gogol's Dead Souls is almost certainly quite a different novel than you have imagined so far. It radiates the free, joyful energy of an artistic work that is the first of its kind and therefore has no model to which it tries to measure up or which it should imitate. Here we encounter phantasmagoric, rapidly changing images, overflowing with bizarre characters and phenomena. Reality, endowed with qualities that are at times hallucinogenic, breaks through the boundaries of the real world with urgency. The author rightly referred to this novel as a poem in prose, because the changing tone and irresistible rhythm of the sentences truly aid in the evocative portrayal of distinct individual characters and phenomena. It is one of the few masterpieces whose reading will forever change the way a person sees other books – and also life. Just please do not listen to those dull teachers who have confused this infectious grandiose farce with mere satirical depictions of social conditions.
