In the mountainous terrain of the Moravian-Slovak border, partisans based in the village of Ploština strike unpleasant blows against the Nazis. At a crucial moment, the partisans betray the trust of the villagers. This has consequences, leading to a sense of shared guilt that destroys the main characters of the novel. The immediate joys of partisan life, love affairs under the threat of an end that can come at any moment, the hard decisions of partisan commanders, the exhausting brutal hunts, harsh days flavored with blood, tears, and gunpowder, where nothing can be pretended – all this as part of a great human drama. The book, based on the author's personal experiences, truthfully, sincerely, and openly – thus contradictorily – depicts armed resistance against bloody violence. It is a living reminder of the thousands of nameless individuals who made the highest possible sacrifice in the name of moral principles: loyalty, honor, and justice.
