And if not now, when? asks the song that has been adopted as the anthem of Gedaliah's partisan group composed of Russian and Polish Jews, men and women determined to fight against the enemy. These are people from whom the war has taken everything – their families, homes, freedom. They have embarked on a long journey from the Belarusian forests and swamps towards the west. However, their struggle often does not meet with understanding and support from the local population or other partisan units. They must cover more than two thousand kilometers and overcome the worst horrors of the final phase of the war if they want to reach Milan, Italy... Primo Levi managed to create a kind of 'Yiddish western' that can entertain even in the whirlwind of tragic wartime events.
