The latest book by one of the greatest contemporary American historians, Fritz Stern, his personal memoirs, is also a kind of memoir of the century - a testimony to the unprecedented and rapid transformations of Germany from the last days of the Weimar Republic to the present. The central theme of his work is the effort to clarify the origins and rise of National Socialism in Germany. Another area of Fritz Stern's research is the history of the Jewish community in Germany and the interaction between Jewish and German culture, which he himself calls the 'Jewish-German symbiosis.'
Fritz Stern spent his childhood, until 1938 - when his family was forced to go into exile, in an atmosphere of rising National Socialism. In the United States, he studied and began teaching German history. After the war, he returned to Europe for work, studied in the archives of the German Democratic Republic, taught in West Berlin, participated in the first German historiographical debate in 1964, and continued his research activities in his homeland even after its reunification.
