The publication is a selection of studies from two books by American literary scholar René Wellek (Concepts of Criticism and Discriminations: Further Concepts of Criticism). In them, the author attempts to provide synthesizing perspectives on the issues of literary history, theory, and criticism, focusing primarily on clarifying a wide range of significantly different methodologies and concepts that are establishing themselves in both European and overseas histories of these disciplines. René Wellek draws on both his deep knowledge of European structuralism and comparative literature, as well as his understanding of American literary traditions, particularly associated with the 'New Criticism.' The editor of the volume and author of the accompanying study is Vladimír Papoušek.
