Beschreibung

A captivating memoir by the world-renowned scientist of Czech origin, Jarda Cervenka (*1933), who has been a professor of medical genetics at the University of Minnesota since 1965 (focusing primarily on cytogenetics). In his memoirs, he successfully evokes the atmosphere of Prague's Dejvice during the German occupation, in the early post-war and post-February years, and his constant battles with the then 'cadre workers' who tried to thwart his medical studies. He writes very modestly, almost ascetically, about his work in America and other continents where he established cytogenetic laboratories (e.g., in India and Japan). His travel expeditions and his own literary work also find a place in the author's autobiography (let's just recall that he is a member of both the American and Czech PEN Club and the Writers' Guild; for his literary work, he received the Richard Sullivan Prize in 2000 in the short story genre, as well as other awards – Minnesota Voices Winner, Japan's Blue Jacket Prize, the European Circle Franz Kafka Prize, and many others).
