Beschreibung
In the fates of women from three generations, Jindra Tichá traces the changes in life in our country, reflecting not only broad social contexts but also the most intimate microcosm of each of us. Readers will primarily meet the author's grandmother Anna, one of the few former businesswomen who built a successful fashion salon in Bratislava at the end of World War I and especially in the newly formed Czechoslovakia, inspired by renowned designers and famous fashion houses in Paris, Rome, and Vienna. The story of her daughter then uncovers the situations that arose as a result of Hitler's occupation of the Czech lands and the birth of the Slovak state. Another layer of the novel presents life in contemporary Czechia. With an unusual realism, Jindra Tichá records the problems of aging and illness in today's Prague and exposes the indifference, or even cruelty, with which the dying are treated in long-term care facilities. The author's successful observations on the coexistence of Czechs and Slovaks in various phases of the twentieth century cannot be overlooked. However, it would not be Jindra Tichá if she did not do so with perspective and deep inner engagement, in stories that captivate readers from the very first page.
