The introductory volume of the editorial series dedicated to Czech royal dynasties. On August 4, 2006, we commemorated 700 years since the moment when Václav III, the King of Bohemia and Poland, was murdered in Olomouc, two months before his 17th birthday, marking the extinction of the Přemyslid dynasty (the only domestic royal dynasty) after nearly 450 years. During these years, more than thirty Přemyslids occupied the Czech throne, a family that rose from the central Bohemian lowlands to the heights of the elite club of the seven electors of the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation. The reign of Přemysl Otakar I marks the beginning of a series of strong rulers, remarkable personalities who succeeded in liberating the Kingdom of Bohemia from dependence on German rulers. Since his time, the royal title in Bohemia had become hereditary, so the last five Přemyslid rulers wore the crown. At the end of the Přemyslid period (during the reigns of Václav II and Václav III), this Czech dynasty even held three royal crowns simultaneously – in addition to the Czech crown, also the Polish and Hungarian crowns.
