One of the most successful prose works by a Czech author, who has been living and working in Dunedin, New Zealand, since the early 1970s, and has already been translated into English and several other languages. A partially autobiographical story, built on the striking contrast between the beginning and the end of one emigration, J. Tichá serves to explore what she perhaps masters best. Namely, the gentle examination of the values of human life, constantly measured against everything humanity has encompassed in its knowledge from antiquity to the present day. The ability to fill abstract philosophical concepts with concrete experiences is one of the strong weapons of this Czech-New Zealand author.
