Written around AD 210, Tertullian’s extensive treatise On the Soul is the first surviving discussion of the human soul from a Christian standpoint and a foundational work of early Christian literature. Straddling literature, philosophy, theology and medicine, it argues against pagan theories of the soul, especially Plato’s, while presenting Tertullian’s own concept of the “bodily soul” (corporalitas animae). This soul is ultimately an “offshoot” (tradux) of Adam’s soul, passed from parents to their descendants through sexual intercourse, a position known as traducianism. This carefully developed adaptation of Stoic thought becomes Tertullian’s most effective weapon against heretical, Platonically influenced teachings on the pre-existence and transmigration of souls, which he believes undermine the foundations of Christianity.
