This Czech-language book offers a philosophical and historical account of political thought from humanism and the Renaissance through the currents of the French Enlightenment, discussing Machiavelli, Erasmus of Rotterdam, Bodin, Suárez, Grotius, Hobbes, Harrington, Locke, Montesquieu and Rousseau. It gives considerable attention to the emergence of the nation-state theory, the Czech Reformation, the right of resistance, religious tolerance, natural and international law, and the theory of the separation of political power. An integral part of the volume is an account of the development of political thought in the Czech lands, beginning with an analysis of the political views of two important representatives of the Czech Reformation, Jan Jesenský and Jan Amos Komenský, and continuing with a description of Pan-Slavism and a comprehensive account of the development of political thought in the Czech lands during the nineteenth century.
