The book compares film production, distribution practices, exhibition, and film reception in three countries that formed the so-called northern triangle from the perspective of the Soviet Union — these were states creating a buffer zone in northeastern Europe between the two power blocs of the Cold War, which influenced both their internal politics and their position towards Moscow. The emphasis on this 'triangle' is characteristic of this book — one of its central themes is the relationship of national cinematography to the Soviet model, or rather the transnational dimension of film culture in the Eastern Bloc. However, the comparative perspective of the book transcends the horizon of the concept of Sovietization as a simplifying view that implies a one-way influence, offering a more nuanced picture of the specific and autonomous features of the film culture of individual countries. At least as important as the basic outlines of cultural policy are the presumed implementers and recipients in the book, from film studios to directors and producers, as well as local party officials, cinema managers, and audiences.
