That summer is one of the hottest that people in Sweden can remember. Commissioner Wallander is preparing for a vacation with the new woman who has entered his life, hoping that his rebellious daughter and aging father can manage without him. But the summer tranquility ends mercilessly when a young girl sets herself on fire in a rapeseed field right before his eyes. Shortly thereafter, a killer strikes, whose brutality knows no bounds. He chooses as his victim a former Swedish Minister of Justice. Soon, however, it becomes clear that the murdered man is just the first in a series of victims of a serial killer... What is the connection between the retired minister, a successful gallery owner, and an ordinary petty thief? Why does the killer scalp his victims? How many more will there be? And who was the girl who was burned? Wallander is desperately searching for answers and, above all, for the one responsible for these atrocities. He has no idea that the killer is closer than he would like.
