The book 'Occult Traditions of the Gypsies' by Pierre Derlon offers Czech readers a completely unique insight into the traditions and customs of nomadic Gypsy tribes, an overview of magical and healing practices, methods of secret communication through coded signs, hand language, as well as customs within the families of nomads. The author lived in this environment from 1939 and published the book in 1975. He thus recorded a testimony to a culture in France and Western Europe that has completely vanished, especially in the Czech Republic, where nomadic Gypsies were violently forced into a settled way of life as early as the late nineteenth century, and definitively after the communist coup.
