The plot of the book unfolds against the backdrop of our current reality, which is overshadowed by the methanol affair. An unassuming house is home to economics student Olda. He wants to separate himself from his family, embroiled in a corruption scandal, and from his father, who "knew" how to make money. His life is interrupted by Renata, a neighbor in the building and a journalist, not only because she accidentally gets involved in the case of Olda's father but also because she is trying to maintain her position in the editorial office thanks to it. The house is inhabited by people with ordinary concerns. The lonely yet optimistic lady "with the paintings" Ema, her new friend Arnošt Czessik, and the divorcing couple Kvant with their child. At the moment of Kvant's wife's attempted dramatic suicide, their little daughter Johanka is left in the care of the neighbors for a while. Renata proposes a marriage arrangement to Olda.
