Beschreibung
In the history of naval warfare in the 19th century, there were far more significant encounters than the battle at Heligoland in 1864; however, this event still attracts attention today not only because two Austrian frigates managed to successfully fight against a Danish superiority, but also because it was the last time unarmored ships faced off as dominant naval units. The colossal naval clash on July 20, 1866, near the island of Vis/Lissa, in which the navies of Italy and Austria fought for dominance over the Adriatic, was the last naval battle of steam sailing ships and the first engagement of ocean-going armored vessels; nevertheless, even though the Austrians fought excellently here as well, the outcome of the Austro-Italian War, paralleling the Prusso-Austrian War, was already determined – Austria lost both... Even though a lot of time has passed, both events remain interesting today, not only in terms of depicting combat scenes but also because the battle at Vis had far-reaching consequences for the development of shipbuilding, naval combat tactics, and naval strategy in the second half of the 19th century. You can read about this in this unique work.
