Malignant tumors of the head and neck represent one of the more common malignancies; among men, these tumors rank among the ten most common malignant tumors overall. The most important risk factors for the development of carcinomas remain nicotine and alcohol. However, it is currently becoming evident that oral infection with high-risk types of human papillomaviruses is also a significant risk factor; according to some authors, one could even speak of a global epidemic of oral cavity and oropharyngeal carcinoma caused by these types of viruses. The monograph addresses the current topic of the role of human papillomaviruses in the etiopathogenesis of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx. It is divided into two interconnected parts. The first chapters summarize the most important findings about squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and oropharynx. The second part of the monograph is dedicated to human papillomaviruses, with a particular focus on their role in the development of this malignant tumor. A separate illustrated appendix presents findings from the authors' own research dedicated to this issue.
