Preclinical and clinical care for patients in a coma with severe brain damage today involves differentiated interdisciplinary therapeutic approaches. Significant progress has been made in these areas in recent years, primarily leading to a reduction in the mortality of these patients. New forms of rehabilitation, mainly involving various concepts of therapeutic stimulation, have already yielded positive experiences. Multisensory-oriented stimulation now forms, together with preventive forms of therapy, the basis of early neurorehabilitation focused on improving consciousness and achieving the first ability to respond and communicate. Once improved consciousness and the ability to communicate are achieved, it becomes possible to develop a whole spectrum of rehabilitative therapy.
