Recent findings have brought significant progress in understanding the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of valvular heart defects. The most common and frequently operated defects are aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation. Advanced left heart valve defects are regularly accompanied by tricuspid regurgitation. From the simplified designation of "degenerative etiology," genetically conditioned, inflammatory, or ischemic changes, active calcification, and many others are gradually emerging. In addition to echocardiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are entering the diagnostic process. Surgical interventions are expanding: while in 1993 only 604 patients were operated on in our country, by 2006 this number had increased to more than five times that. In recent years, more than 500 surgical corrections of secondary tricuspid regurgitation have been performed in our country. A collective of thirteen authors who contributed to the creation of this publication has attempted to gather new information and offer the optimal current diagnostic and therapeutic approach for patients with valvular defects, but also to remind that we can only adequately examine and treat a defect if the attending physician thinks of it in time, places a stethoscope on the patient's chest, and hears it.
