Aging today is no longer the privilege of a few fortunate individuals, but is granted to most of us. Never before in human history have so many people lived to see their own old age, that is, 80 or even 90 years. These population trends are also evident in the Czech Republic, where the increase in life expectancy is the fastest among all post-communist European countries. Unfortunately, old age is currently burdened with high morbidity, polymorbidity, polypharmacy, and a decline in physical fitness and independence. Despite the increase in life expectancy, the health status and disability of the older population in our country are continuously deteriorating. Results from gerontological research demonstrate that timely and accurate diagnosis of diseases and aggressive and effective treatment increase the chances of older patients achieving full recovery and reduce subsequent disability and dependence. While no one today doubts the legitimacy of pediatrics as a separate field, including specialized healthcare services for pediatric patients, geriatrics remains inadequately integrated into the Czech healthcare system.
