The book was created based on long-term collaboration between the Psychiatric and Neurological Clinics of the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, and the General University Hospital in Prague. It is intended for neurologists who, in their practice, must often address accompanying depressive symptoms in addition to the primary neurological condition as part of a comprehensive approach to patients, and it will certainly also serve general practitioners who have patients under their long-term care. It may also be beneficial for psychiatrists in consultative activities with neurological patients. The authors hope that this text will become not only a source of modern information about depressive disorders but also a comprehensible guide for practical diagnosis and therapy of depressive disorders by non-psychiatric physicians. There are countless arguments for why we should actively intervene in the course of depressive disorders associated with physical illnesses, and among the fundamental ones is the evidence that if a patient is simultaneously troubled by psychological symptoms in the form of a depressive syndrome, the primary condition has a worse course and is less amenable to treatment. In some diseases, it even demonstrably increases patient mortality.
