Causae mortis v chirurgii na přelomu tisíciletí – Pafko Pavel (2005)

From the preface: In 1961, a monograph by Professor Emerich Polák and a collective of authors titled Causae mortis in surgery was published by the State Health Publishing House. It was the first monograph in Czech literature that comprehensively addressed a topic that is rarely discussed, namely deaths in surgery and their causes. When we considered the need to write texts on this subject more than 40 years after the publication of Polák's monograph, we realized that today's modern, fast-paced society views surgery and hospitalization as something trivial, where a patient 'jumps in' for a few days, sometimes just for a day, and then returns to their obligations. People do not realize the risks associated with even 'trivial' surgeries. If complications or even death occur, a culprit is immediately sought. The number of lawsuits is increasing. In this presented monograph, we aim to show that even today, just like 50 years ago, despite the advancements in medicine, people can die after surgery. Of course, much has changed; some causes of death remain the same, some have practically disappeared, but new, previously unknown causes have emerged.
