From the preface: Our civilization is characterized by the rising incidence of cardiovascular diseases. At the beginning of the last century, heart and vascular diseases accounted for four percent of total mortality; today, it is more than fifty percent. This has been contributed to by changing lifestyles and environments. The composition of diets has changed, the organization of society's life has shifted, psychosocial stress is increasing, and all of this has an impact on the epidemic of cardiovascular diseases. The structure of cardiovascular diseases has also changed. In the first third of the twentieth century, rheumatic heart disease with pancarditis, valvular defects, and heart failure was at the forefront. In older age, cerebral vascular accidents were more common, with more frequent hemorrhages in hypertensives than with infarctions due to occlusion of certain cerebral arteries. Myocardial infarction was rare and began to be clinically recognized only in the 1930s. Now, ischemic heart disease has become the most common cause of mortality worldwide, followed by cerebrovascular diseases, predominantly thrombotic occlusions of arteries damaged by atherosclerosis.
