Vincent van Gogh, whose paintings are today the pride of the most prestigious museums in the world and have immeasurable value, sold only one single canvas during his lifetime. The rest were inherited by the wife of the artist's brother and patron, Theo van Gogh, Johanna Bonger. After Theo's untimely death, his young widow was left with a child and no means. Nevertheless, she dedicated her life to presenting the work of the genius creator to the world.

Her touching, at times even thrilling story unfolds in the pages of a mysterious notebook that the famous New York painter Violet Velar gives to her granddaughter Emsley before her death. Young entrepreneur Emsley immerses herself in Johanna's story at a moment when her own life is crumbling: her company is failing, her long-term relationship is ending, and she is also deeply affected by the death of her beloved grandmother, to whom she was closest in the family. While clearing out Violet's house, she encounters more and more surprises. Johanna's fate seems so inspiring to Emsley that it compels her to reassess her own life. Not only does she open her heart to new love, but she also begins to unravel the threads of family secrets. Ultimately, it is in the past that she finds the answers to where she wants to go in life and who she would like to become.
