A whole range of books has already been written about the Third Reich. However, few have dealt with the relationship of the Nazis to animals. This relationship was, in fact, one of the central themes of Nazi ideology, which profoundly influenced the thinking and behavior of the Reich Germans – from attitudes toward pets to landscape protection and the "cleansing" of the Aryan race from Jews. Insects, for example, were part of the preparations for war, dog breeding served as a model for racial mania, and deer were meant to support the myth of the "ancient German forest." Jan Mohnhaupt, with great sympathy for animals, explores the special role of animals in National Socialism. In the style of a historical report, he traces their paths, from horses on the Eastern Front to cats in German living rooms.
