If you want to be a fisherman, you have to think like a fish," the old merchant and violinist Ivar tells his nephew Jon. He has an endless supply of similar advice. Ivar is preparing to gift Jon the ownership rights to a cold mountain lake, a boat with equipment, nets, and a fishing cabin. There's one catch: the musician and lifelong homebody Jon loves to travel and enjoy freedom, while taking on such an inheritance means hard work and responsibility. But what if he becomes part of something that transcends him? On a bright autumn day, the two men set off to the fishing cabin to spend a week together: Jon equipped with a new notebook and Ivar determined to teach his clumsy but not entirely hopeless nephew everything he needs to know – about fishing and life.
