The slim, essayistic book by Timothy Snyder, Tyranny, caused quite a stir a few years ago, quickly climbing to the bestseller list of The New York Times and being published in over forty languages. The author of Bloodlands and Black Earth, which deal with the Holocaust and mass murders in Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, described the beginnings of totalitarian regimes in this work. Even if he did not explicitly mention Donald Trump eleven times, it was clear why he wrote the book: he viewed Trump's rise to power as a danger comparable to fascism, communism, or Nazism of the 20th century. Snyder's twenty lessons from 20th-century European history show that the collapse of society, democracy, and morality, as well as our personal failures in times of political crises, are not unimaginable.
