The extensive saga begins in the mid-19th century in the Moravian countryside and continues in Vienna through a headlong flight from the Nazis to a hard-won new existence in America. The author assigns a significant role to her great-uncle Otto Flatter, a painter who in 1932 carved and painted cardboard figures representing some family members. His puppet theater survived the dramas of exile and has been preserved to this day.
