The author captures the true fates of women who were deported to Soviet gulags after World War II from various corners of Central Europe in this novel adaptation, with the protagonist Irena Kalaschová hailing from Czechoslovakia. The artistic narrative about Stalinist penal camps is all the more striking as the evil is inflicted upon women, usually completely innocent, who find themselves in Siberia often for the most absurd reasons. The central story of Irena Kalaschová is about fatal injustice, the loss of family and friends, suffering and maternal love, defiance, and the will to never give in. Through her fates, we glimpse into the life of the women's Kolyma camp in the Far East. It consists not only of female prisoners living and working in horrific conditions but also a number of other tragic or bizarre characters, especially the guards. All of them create a web of complex relationships, yet the camp world is not divided into good and bad, but into people with hope and those without.
