After several novels and autobiographically inclined prose, Martina Formanová presents a collection of shorter stories that share a common theme – partnerships and intimate relationships in their most diverse forms. With understanding and humorous detachment, she depicts often bizarre situations and mishaps that we find ourselves in as a result of the confrontation between our dreams, goals, and intentions with reality. Here, the female world clashes not only with the male world, but also our perceptions of ourselves and others with the actual and often random course of the world. The characters in the stories come from various ages and social and professional backgrounds. The reader encounters, for example, a thirteen-year-old girl whose awakening sexuality evokes both repulsion and romantic dreaming; a versatilely successful and irresistible man who is caught up by a minor failure in his youth; ordinary middle-aged couples in love and marriage, tired of stereotypes; a young translator supplementing her income with the world's oldest profession; and a fifty-year-old man, permanently frightened of his wife... The author's snapshots of the love and sexual life of the species homo sapiens provide an understanding and humorous read that enriches both genders.
