Co odvál dým aneb Jak jsem přežil holokaust – Bondy Miloš (2017)

Miloš Bondy begins his memories with a description of the transport to Terezín with his parents. He was 16 years old at the time. They were interned in Terezín for several months; although the living conditions were very cramped and difficult, they were less deadly compared to other camps. However, at the beginning of February 1943, the entire family was transported east to the extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. This marks the beginning of the pivotal part of Miloš Bondy's memories – from the initial selection on the ramp, where his mother was assigned to the group of women going to the gas chamber, to his stay with his father in the initial 'quarantine' and adjusting to the inhumane and murderous living conditions in the camp. After the end of the 'quarantine' and the death of his father, Miloš Bondy was transferred to the main camp Auschwitz I. Here, he vividly describes the forced labor he had to perform, the torture from the kapos and their role in the concentration camp system, the relationships among prisoners of various nationalities (Poles, Russians, Ukrainians, French, Dutch, and Jews), and his time in the 'infirmary.' He survived several selections for the gas chamber and horrific medical experiments with great luck. After several months, he was transferred back to Auschwitz-Birkenau with other Jews.
