Beschreibung
A novel about fateful loves, departures, and returns of Czechs who came to Volhynia for a better life at the end of the 19th century. "This second edition (after 25 years) has been updated by the times themselves. With the war in Ukraine, the book and the fates within it become even more urgent." Martin Vopěnka. Great-grandfather Jan Sládek, the second son of a farmer from Podřipsko, originally wanted to emigrate to America, but he couldn't swim and was afraid of the ocean. He set off eastward overland and, at the invitation of Russian Tsar Alexander II, moved his family to Volhynia. This established the tragic fate of several generations of his descendants. In Křemenci, he then baked bread under the rule of Ukraine, Russia, Poland, and Germany. In peace, Ukrainians, Russians, Rusyns, and Jews lived in Volhynia only between two totalitarian regimes, Bolshevism and Nazism, and between two world wars. Such are the histories of old Europe, and it continues to this day...
