In 2018, 200 years passed since the birth of Karl Marx, one of the most controversial figures in world history. Marx wrote the text of the Communist Manifesto when he was just under 30 years old, reportedly over a weekend in Brussels in January 1848. Even he surely did not anticipate at the time of writing that in the next century, nearly half of humanity would be governed, at least formally, in accordance with the ideas and ambitions first laid out on these pages.
