An epic historical novel set in the harsh 11th century tells the story of the first Czech king, Vratislav, who assisted Henry IV during the imperial coronation in Rome. Although Vratislav was the second-born and ascended to the throne after his brother Spytihněv, he became a powerful ruler, well-versed in both imperial and curial politics. His wives, Adelheid of Hungary and Swatawa of Poland, were extraordinary women who elevated his court to royal status. Vratislav built Prague Castle and the chapter at Vyšehrad, and his life was marked by both war and romantic adventures. He was the first Czech ruler whose subjects designated him with the epithet 'the Kind,' and he ruled for over thirty years.
