In the three-part Chronicle of the Executioners, we delve into the secrets of Jan Mydlář, a scholar and doctor of medicine, who, by the hand of fate and mainly due to his love for the fickle Dorotka, became the executioner of Old Town. Despite his bloody profession, Mydlář was a very wealthy and respected man, dealing with city officials, judges, and secretly associating with Emperor Rudolf II and many nobles who could not do without an executioner. The colorful and thrilling stories from the Old Town executioner's house touched upon important historical events that preceded the greatest religious war among Christians. Jan Mydlář was a Protestant at heart, revered God, and believed in justice, even though it may not always prevail in this world. It became fatal for him that he remained in the service of the Habsburg emperors despite the warnings of friends and his wife, who made him an instrument of their unjust revenge. As the executioner of the royal city, he was an unwilling actor in the bloody Old Town execution, which was spoken of throughout Europe and is still remembered today.
