Beschreibung

This Czech-language book examines the dramatic transformation of American foreign policy in the second half of the 1940s. Under the influence of the accelerating Cold War conflict, the United States abandoned its more than century-old foundations, including isolationism and the Monroe Doctrine, and adopted a new role in world politics. This completed a process that had begun at the turn of the century and was associated with Theodore Roosevelt. In the first post-war years, the United States linked its security and prosperity with the eastern shore of the North Atlantic, while Western Europe, recovering from the catastrophe of the Second World War, was to become a key American ally in the decades that followed. The book focuses on the crucial period of 1945–1947, when the US administration began to understand the danger posed to the free world by its wartime ally, Stalin’s Soviet Union. It examines the decision to provide economic aid to Europe as a step forced both by Soviet policy and by domestic economic problems.
