We have known Petra Kukal in his previous collections as a sensitive portraitist from the Polabí region, as well as a poet who gazes beyond the horizon of sensibly tangible reality, where seeing and knowing become a certainty of another kind. In The Penultimate Train, we also recognize him as a poetic "moment-catcher," a lyrical commentator on everyday life. An enchanted observer — that burning intensity of a middle-aged man! — of youthful beauty and allure, while in confrontation with the lace knee-highs of nurses, the ice of middle age thins to paper. Somehow, it has happened that the people this "Prague walker" and "train rider" meets are generally younger than he is.
