This is what Raymond Carver’s second major collection would have been called and looked like in 1981 if editor Gordon Lish had not drastically cut, rewritten and retitled it as What We Talk About When We Talk About Love. The correspondence between the two men survives, showing how hard Carver tried to defend his work, without success: Lish removed four-fifths of the text from some stories. Carver (1938–1988) published some original versions during his lifetime, but the stories in their entirety appear in their previously rewritten form for the first time.
